This post is all about being okay with being alone.
These days knowing how to be your own best friend and being okay with being alone is like having a superpower. It allows you to reject the pull to quantity over quality whether that be in the friends you have or the followers.
You’re going to learn things you can do to challenge yourself to enjoy your own company. You’ll also read about how being okay with being alone can empower you, boost your confidence, and is one of the best forms of self-care you can give yourself.
If this particular year in my life has taught me anything, it’s that I can’t rely on people to bring me joy. When you realize that you hold the power, that simply being there for yourself is more than enough, no one can take your joy. You get to choose, it becomes up to you.
This post is all about being okay with being alone.
Being Okay With Being Alone
Get to Know Yourself
I think the secret to truly being at peace with being alone is being at peace with who you are. People come and go but you will always have yourself so it’s important to, in your own way, accept yourself.
Getting to know yourself is like getting to know a new friend. At first, it’s probably awkward because you’re not sure how you fit and you haven’t spent much time with them. However, the more you get to know a new friend, it can feel like you’ve known them for ages and you might even grow to love their company.
The same thing goes for being okay with being alone. As you become more familiar with yourself, you might even prefer being alone so you can just do whatever you want. You start to become your own best friend.
“Within each of us, there is a silence as vast as the Universe. And when we experience that silence, we remember who we are.”
Fun Things To Try on Your Own
When you stop waiting for other people so that you can start doing the things you actually want to do, you free yourself. Now you don’t have to wait since you have yourself, and that’s all you need.
1) Solo Brunch
If you love brunch as much as I do, you should try going on your own! Sometimes you just want to head outside and eat your favorite food, but none of your friends are available or it’s too last minute.
There have been so many times I’ve just wanted to do something but stop myself because I think it might be strange that I’m on my own. It isn’t. Most people don’t even care what you’re doing because we’re all just thinking about ourselves.
Take advantage of the fact that no one really cares and go enjoy your fluffy waffles and an early day.
2) Go for a Walk in Nature
Besides staying fit and healthy, going for walks can be incredibly therapeutic. Personally, whenever there’s a lot going on in my life, a nice walk helps clear my mind.
When you’re walking alone, you feel more at ease and don’t have to worry about anyone else. You can listen to some music, or a podcast, or just take in your surroundings.
3) Reading While It’s Raining
This one is so relaxing, particularly with the sound of rain and the dimness of an overcast day. With books you’re never really alone, you’re immersed in this story and that can be so comforting.
You can light a candle, make your favorite cozy drink, mummify yourself in blankets, and read to the sounds of rain.
4) Ordering Food and Having a Movie Night
If reading’s not your thing, you can have a cozy movie night instead. You can binge-watch your favorite show or put on a comfort movie.
It’s better to do these kinds of things alone because you don’t really talk while watching a movie anyway. And you can watch whatever you want without anyone else having a say.

5) Listening to Music and Having a Dance Party
This is your chance to let yourself be wild and loose. I mean, no one’s there to judge your taste in music or your dancing skills so go all out. Have a whole concert and dance.
“You were once wild here. Don’t let them tame you.” -Isadora Duncan
Being okay with being alone doesn’t have to be sad or boring. It’s up to you to have a good time despite being alone.
Alone does not have to mean lonely.
6) Go to an Art Museum
Even if you’re not the biggest fan of art, it can surprise you. Maybe you’d like it if you made up stories about the paintings or what the artist was thinking when they made this glass sculpture or that statue, etc.
Whatever it is, you can let your imagination take over and just be creative. Plus, getting lost in art museums is kind of fun and can be very inspiring.
7) Trying Out New Hobbies
This is your chance to start a new hobby you’ve always wanted to do. Hobbies are a great way to pass time in a fun way and you don’t need anyone else for it.
Think of something you haven’t done in months that you’d maybe want to try again. Or you can start a new long-term project and set goals for yourself.
Being on your own is a great time to try new things even though it can be daunting. It allows you to have something of your own you don’t mind going back to in your free time.
8) Going on a Drive
Roll down the windows, put on a playlist, and just let yourself enjoy the moment. There’s something about an open road, especially a scenic one, in which you can be free and entirely yourself shouting along to your favorite songs.
There can be a destination or none at all.
What I like to do is pick up a treat before heading home. Sometimes you just gotta do something nice for yourself. If you don’t set the example, who else will?
9) Journaling
Journaling is one of the best ways to be introspective and reflect. By doing this, you become more comfortable with yourself and you begin to understand yourself better.
Plus, writing is like talking to a friend except that friend is the paper. At least you know it’s always gonna be there if you have something you want to say.
The best way to write is to not force yourself otherwise it becomes a chore. I tend to journal when my mind is cluttered when there’s this puzzle in my mind that needs solving. If you do write, be honest with the paper. After all, this is just for you.
Becoming Your Own Best Friend
Being okay with being alone gets better with time. There will always be moments when you probably wish you didn’t have to be alone or you could be with someone else. Being okay on your own is not something you achieve that completely eliminates any feelings of loneliness.
The point of becoming your own best friend is to become independent. If you can find peace being alone then you can find peace no matter what happens. Whether people betray you, you break up with someone, or the relationship simply fades, you know you’ll be alright because you still have yourself.
“What is the best thing you could be doing right now and why aren’t you doing that?”
As long as you can have your own life, not contingent on anyone else, you will be okay with being alone. Being on your own is not a weakness, it’s a strength. Let that strength empower you and when you see that it’s up to you, no one can take your joy.
